The Dutch Bulb Region is world-famous for its tulips. Every spring, the fields from Noordwijk to Hillegom are ablaze with every colour of the rainbow. But why do tulips grow so well here of all places? Simon and Sylvia Pennings from Tulip Experience Amsterdam explain what makes this region so special and why it is such an ideal location for tulip growers.

A unique natural environment for tulips
“Everything here is just right for tulips.” The region lies close to the sea, nestled between dunes and polders. This location provides a perfect balance of sun, wind and humidity. The sea air brings oxygen and a cooling effect, whilst the soil rarely dries out. And that is exactly what tulips need to grow strong and healthy.

“We have sea air here, shells in the soil and soil that drains well,” explains Simon. “Those shells contain calcium, which is good for growth. And the wind ensures that fungi and diseases don’t stand a chance. That’s what makes the Bollenstreek unique.”

The power of the soil
The soil in the Bollenstreek is sandy. Its structure is loose enough to allow water to drain away effectively, whilst at the same time retaining sufficient moisture.

Sylvia adds: “It may sound simple, but it is precisely that balance that makes the tulips so robust. The bulbs get enough oxygen, but are never left standing in water. And thanks to the calcium from the shells, they grow strong and the flowers shine with extra beauty.”

The soil is also light in colour, which helps to reflect sunlight. As a result, the soil warms up evenly, which is ideal for young tulip bulbs.

A climate with character

The weather in the Bollenstreek isn’t always perfect for days at the beach, but it is perfect for tulips. The mild winters and cool summers give the bulbs the rest they need to store energy for the following season.

Simon: “Tulips don’t like extreme heat or drought. Here, the climate is stable and humid, with a fresh sea breeze. That makes all the difference.”

This natural balance ensures that tulips in the Bollenstreek not only take root more quickly, but also bloom more profusely and colourfully than in other parts of the Netherlands or Europe.

Tradition and craftsmanship

As well as nature, people also play an important role. The Bollenstreek has built up centuries of knowledge and experience. For generations, families here have been working with flowers and bulbs.

“It’s in our blood,” says Sylvia, a third-generation grower. “We grew up with tulips. We pass that knowledge down from generation to generation. And you can see that reflected in the quality.”

The combination of tradition and innovation keeps the Bollenstreek alive. Growers experiment with new varieties, whilst cherishing old techniques. In this way, the Bollenstreek remains the beating heart of the tulip world.
